Vein Matching Is Decided Before Anything Is Set
Natural stone arrives as a sequence. Slabs cut from the same block continue each other's pattern, and that sequence is only useful if it is preserved during installation. Every piece is dry-laid and numbered before a single one is bonded, so the veining runs continuously across a wall and turns the corner instead of stopping at the seam.
Book-matched stone takes this further: adjacent slabs are mirrored so the pattern opens symmetrically, like a butterfly. It is the detail that separates a stone wall from a feature wall, and it is unforgiving — the layout has to be right the first time, because the pieces cannot be re-cut to fit.

The Setting Details That Cannot Be Undone
White thinset under light stone. Marble and other translucent stones let the setting material show through. Grey thinset under white marble produces a permanent grey cast that no amount of polishing removes. This is decided before the first piece goes down.
Finish chosen for the location. Honed, polished and leathered are not interchangeable. Polished marble on a shower floor is a slip hazard, not a design decision. Honed handles wear better in traffic; leathered hides etching on a countertop.
Sealing and honest maintenance instructions. Stone is sealed on completion, and you get plain instructions about what will and will not etch it. Marble reacts to acid — lemon, wine, some cleaners — and that is a property of the material, not a defect. Knowing it upfront is the difference between a client who is satisfied and one who is surprised.
Stone or Porcelain
Not every project should use natural stone, and saying so is part of the job. Where the look matters more than the material, large-format porcelain reproduces marble convincingly, does not etch, and needs no sealing. Where the stone itself is the point — a book-matched feature wall, a slab that continues into the kitchen backsplash — nothing substitutes for it.
That comparison is worth having before material is ordered, because it is the decision that moves the budget the most.
